A Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre worker is being treated for what police are describing as “potentially serious upper body injuries” in what the ABC understands is the 13th assault on a staff member at the site this year.
Paramedics and police were called to the site at about 1pm today and the 36-year-old woman was rushed to hospital.
Bendigo Health says she is in a stable condition.
Police say the alleged offender, a 16-year-old male, is expected to be charged.
New statistics reveal assaults frequent
A Freedom of Information request by the ABC has revealed there have been 91 occupational violence claims reported to Worksafe involving staff being assaulted by young people at the facility over the past seven years.
Twenty-three assaults were reported in 2019 – the highest number over the seven-year period – and 17 claims were made last year.
According to Worksafe statistics, 12 assaults were reported up to August this year.
According to the Department of Justice, there have been 26 assaults in total at its youth justice facilities until September this year, but it refused to specify how many involved Malmsbury Youth Justice staff.
