A man has been killed in a workplace accident at a strawberry farm in Bullsbrook, north-east of Perth. The accident happened at 9.20 am on Wednesday at Pick Your Own Strawberry Farm on Old West Road.
A tractor sitting in a field caught the attention of workers. When they went to investigate, they found the man deceased. It’s believed he had somehow become trapped in machinery attached to the rear of the tractor.
Firefighters, police and paramedics were called, but there was nothing they could do. Because there were no witnesses, it’s unclear exactly how the accident happened or how long the man had been there for. WorkSafe investigators are at the site.
Farm management released a statement saying the deceased man was a contracted worker and sent their thoughts and prayers to his family and friends. There were dozens of other workers out in the fields when the accident happened.
Several continued picking strawberries for hours after the fatality before they were sent home and the farm was closed for the day. The police chaplain also attended the scene to offer comfort and support to fellow workers.
Despite being called Pick Your Own, it’s understood the farm was not open to the public at the time of the fatality.
