Tow truck operator gets prison sentence for WHS incident

A vehicle on board a tow truck rolled off and killed a 67-year-old man who was standing at its rear.

A South Australian tow truck operator has received a suspended prison sentence for failing to secure a vehicle which subsequently rolled off the truck and killed a 67-year-old man.

The victim was standing at the rear end of the tow truck during the February 2019 incident.

A South Australian police investigation found the operator failed to ensure the safety of the truck on board, before it rolled.

The tow truck operator pleaded guilty in Port Pirie Magistrates Court to failing to ensure the safety of their transport activities.

The court imposed a custodial sentence of 10 months, which was reduced to six months because of the guilty plea.

The whole sentence was suspended on the condition of good behaviour for two years.

The operator has also been suspended from any transport activities for 12 months.
