A metal fabrication subcontractor has been charged after a man broke his back in a 4m fall at Melbourne Airport.
The accident occurred when the man, who worked for Melbourne company Karagata Aust Pty Ltd, was installing a walkway to go underneath a new baggage conveyor inside Terminal 2 in December 2021.
The worker fell through a ceiling panel to the floor four metres below and broke his back as a result.
WorkSafe has now charged the company with three offences for failing to provide and maintain a safe workplace.
The work safety watchdog alleges Karagata failed to provide its employees with instruction and training on full protection measures, and also failed to reduce or eliminate the risk of a fall by using a fall arrest system.
The matter is listed for a filing hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday.
