A strapper working for racehorse trainer Danny O’Brien’s stable has died after the horse he was riding was hit by a car south of Geelong this morning. Victoria Police said the incident happened on Thirteenth Beach Road at Connewarre about 6:45am.
The man, believed to be in his early 30s and yet to be publically identified, died at the scene.
In a statement, Danny O’Brien’s stable said its “thoughts, prayers and support” were with the family of their friend and colleague. “We are completely heartbroken. We have had some tough days in this industry, but they are nothing compared to the heartbreak and sadness of today,” the statement said. “We ask that the privacy of our staff to be respected as they come to terms with today’s tragedy.”
The driver of the car and the horse sustained minor injuries in the incident, police said. The stable also said a vet would continue monitoring the horse’s progress. The owners of the horse were notified about the incident.
WorkSafe is investigating and will prepare a report for the coroner.
