WorkSafe ACT and police are investigating the death of a 60-year-old man on a construction site in Denman Prospect on Tuesday morning.
Police said that at about 10:10 am they were called to the site after a worker had fallen from a residential building being constructed on Temple Terrace.
ACT Ambulance Service paramedics also attended but despite their efforts the man died at the scene.
WorkSafe ACT inspectors are expected to remain at the site until late in the day and are working closely with ACT Policing’s Criminal Investigation Team. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
WorkSafe ACT is ensuring that support is put in place for colleagues of the worker and witnesses at the scene.
Tuesday’s death is the second at a Denman Prospect worksite this year. A 47-year-old man died on 11 January when a pallet of tiles fell on him.
Minister for Employment and Workplace Safety Suzanne Orr said the latest death was seriously concerning in the light of recent public safety messaging and targeted Worksafe ACT enforcement activity in the residential construction sector.
“The Government will closely monitor the outcomes of WorkSafe ACT’s investigations into these incidents and we will continue to support compliance activity across the construction industry to ensure the work health and safety obligations of everyone on worksites are being met,” she said.
Ms Orr expressed her condolences, saying any worksite death is unacceptable.
“The death of a construction site worker in the ACT today is a tragedy and I express my deepest condolences to the man’s family and colleagues,” she said.
“It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure all workers return home safe at the end of the day.”
