Inspectors and major hazard specialists have been on site providing technical support and expertise to lead agencies, including Fire Rescue Victoria, after the fire at the facility’s MOGAS Unit at approximately 11.15pm yesterday.
It is understood no workers were injured in the incident.
WorkSafe Chief Health and Safety Officer Sam Jenkin said a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the fire would be commenced once the site was safe.
“Right now, as Victoria’s health and safety and dangerous goods regulator, WorkSafe’s priority is supporting lead agencies to ensure that all work on the site is carried out safely and without risk to workers or the public,” Mr Jenkin said.
“We understand there is significant community concern about this incident and will continue to engage with our stakeholders during the ongoing response and recovery.”
WorkSafe takes the risk of dangerous goods seriously and uses all of its powers to hold duty holders to account.
The refinery is a licensed major hazard facility and is subject to stringent legal obligations and regular inspections by WorkSafe’s dedicated Major Hazards and Dangerous Goods division, which provides guidance and advice to duty holders, assesses control measures and can take enforcement action when there is evidence of a contravention or an immediate risk to health and safety.
WorkSafe’s comprehensive investigations can often be complex and take more than 12 months to complete.
