Cane farmer critical after freak accident

A well-known Hinchinbrook cane farmer who suffered critical head injuries in what has been described as a “freak” workplace accident is in a critical condition.

Cane farmer and businessman Peter Poppi, 76, remains in a critical but stable condition in Townsville University Hospital after falling a metre backwards from a bulldozer onto concrete on August 12.

The wider Poppi family are highly regarded in the Hinchinbrook Shire, with the surname occupying half a column in the local phone book.

Mr Poppi, who has three adult children, is understood to have recently sold a cane-harvesting business but retains Poppi Bros Earthmoving in Challands Street, Ingham.

The business was the scene of the accident, where Mr Poppi described as hardworking despite his age, was believed to have slipped on the bulldozers tracks.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is investigating.
